In Colombia, seventeen-year-old Maria Álvarez, who works in sweatshop-like conditions at a flower plantation, discovers that she is pregnant. She refuses to marry the baby’s father and travels to Bogotá, where she is offered a lucrative but risky job as a drug mule, smuggling heroin into the United States.
