Sergei, a gruff and experienced meteorologist, works at a remote Soviet-era weather station on an island in the Arctic circle. He is dismayed to find that he will be joined for the summer by Pavel, an enthusiastic if slightly immature meteorology student. While Sergei is away on an unauthorised fishing trip, Pavel receives tragic news about Sergei’s family and must decide how – or if – to tell him.
