On the outbreak of the Second World War, Guido, an optimistic and open-minded Jewish bookshop owner, is separated from his wife Dora and imprisoned in a concentration camp with his young son, Giosuè. Guido employs his fertile imagination to shield Giosuè from the horrific truth of their situation, telling him that they are competing with others to win an armored tank – so everything from food shortages to tattoos is explained as part of the contest.
