This documentary examines the controversial and moving work of Impressionist painter Otto Dix, whose experiences as a soldier during World War I shaped his artistic inspirations. Maltreatment after an injury spurred Dix to create a series of canvases depicting the reality of battle. His paintings became even more political, culminating in the early 1930s when the Nazi occupation forced Dix to abandon his art and join the German Army once again. The darkness with which Dix painted his nightmares still serves as a testament to the horror of war.
