In Paris in 1957, literature student Anne Goupil attends a party with her brother and meets Philip Kaufman, an American escaping McCarthyism, and Gerard Lenz, a theatre director. Everyone at the party is talking about the apparent suicide of their friend Juan, a Spanish activist, and Philip warns Anne that the forces that killed Juan will soon do the same to Gerard. Anne joins the investigation into why Juan died.
